What Does SISU Mean?

One of the most common questions we get when someone walks through the doors at SISU Fit is simple:

What does SISU mean?

SISU is a Finnish word that doesn’t translate perfectly into English, and honestly, that’s part of why we love it.

It represents courage. Determination. Resilience.. The ability to keep going when things get hard.

Not loud motivation.

Not hype.

Not perfection.

SISU is the quiet strength to continue.

It’s waking up early to train before work. It’s rebuilding your health after years of putting yourself last. It’s showing up even when motivation fades. It’s choosing long-term strength over short-term comfort.

When we named the gym SISU, we wanted the name to stand for more than fitness.

Because fitness isn’t just about losing weight or building muscle. It’s about building a stronger human being from the inside out.

At SISU Fit, we believe real training should help you:

  • Move better

  • Feel stronger

  • Build resilience

  • Increase longevity

  • Improve confidence

  • Handle life outside the gym better

That’s why our approach combines strength training, mobility, recovery, community, and accountability into a system that fits real life.

You don’t need to be the fittest person in the room to belong here.

You just need the willingness to keep showing up.

That’s SISU.

And over time, something powerful happens: You stop chasing quick fixes and start building a life that’s stronger, healthier, and more sustainable.

So the next time you see the word SISU on the wall, on a shirt, or above the front doors, know this:

It’s not just the name of a gym.

It’s the mindset we’re trying to help people build every single day.
